Children Left Behind: A Child's Right to Education in the United States
IRP Research Fellow, Baris Gumus-Dawes, will be speaking at the Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights Annual Human Rights Law & Policy Conference, June 15, 2007. Her talk Racial and Economic Segregation in Schools: Barrier to Quality and Equality in Education, may be viewed by clicking on the adjacent link.
Racial and economic segregation in schools is a fundamental barrier to accessing quality education. Schools in the Twin Cities region are already severely segregated and the problem is intensifying rapidly. School segregation harms the academic performance, completion rates, and future life opportunities of students of color. In contrast, racially integrated schools offer numerous social and educational benefits that improve access to opportunity for students of color.
